Tributes have been paid to Luke Etheridge, 16, who died after a car entered the River Wear in Sunderland on Tuesday afternoon. He has been described as a “bright, energetic and positive” young man.
Jackson Duke, 17, and Zara Shaw, 16, also lost their lives in the tragedy. Luke was a member of the Youth Almighty Project, a youth and community group in Sunderland.
The organisation expressed its heartbreak in a post on Facebook.
Youth group tribute
“It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that one of our members, Luke Etheridge, aged 16, sadly passed away,” it said. “Those who were lucky enough to know Luke will know just how loved and well liked he truly was. Luke was such a bright, energetic and positive young person, with a personality that could light up any room.
“He had a wonderful way of bringing his energy to everyone he met and leaving a lasting impression on those around him. He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him and being part of his life. Our thoughts, love and prayers are with Luke’s family, friends and everyone who is affected by this tragic loss. Rest peacefully, Luke. You will be missed more than words can say.”
Football club tribute
Luke had also played football for Humbledon & Plains Farm YFC football club, in Sunderland. The club also paid tribute to him.
“It is with great sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that one of our former players, Luke Etheridge, aged 16, sadly passed away,” it said. “Luke was a much loved and liked player during his time at Plainsy and very much part of a successful squad including promotions and goals. He was liked by all.
“Our thoughts, love and prayers are with Luke’s family, friends and everyone who is affected by this tragic loss.”
Investigation ongoing
Police received a number of reports from the public of a black Audi A3 car coming off the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge and entering the water on Tuesday afternoon. Jackson, Zara and Luke were all in the car at the time. Jackson and Luke were from the Sunderland area, while Zara was from Houghton-le-Spring.
An investigation into their deaths is ongoing. A 17-year-old boy, who was also in the car, was not seriously injured. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
