School pays tribute

Christ's College in Sunderland, where Zara had been a pupil since the age of four before leaving this summer, has paid tribute to her. In a statement, the school described her as a "kind and loyal" student who was a "delight to teach".

"Christ's College is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of former student Zara Shaw, who was a much loved member of the school family," the school said. "Zara was a kind and loyal student with a close-knit circle of friends. She maintained strong and positive relationships with her peers and her teachers, she worked hard in school and staff described Zara as a delight to teach.

"Everyone in the school community sends their deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of all three young people who lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident."

Support offered

The school said it would also be providing support to staff and students. "Support is available to any of our staff or students, and their families, who may be affected by this tragedy," it said.

The Drama Lab, a drama school in Sunderland, has also paid tribute to Zara, who was a former student. "We are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of our former student, Zara Shaw," it said in a social media post. "Our heartfelt condolences go to Zara's family and loved ones, and to the parents and families of all those affected by this devastating accident. Our thoughts are with everyone grieving at this incredibly difficult time."

Investigation ongoing

Officers say they received a number of reports from the public of a black Audi A3 car coming off the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge and entering the water on Tuesday afternoon. Jackson, Zara and Luke Etheridge were all in the car at that time. Jackson and Luke were from the Sunderland area, while Zara was from Houghton-le-Spring.

An investigation into their deaths is ongoing. A 17-year-old boy, who was also in the car, was not seriously injured. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
