A 20-month-old boy has died of heatstroke after reportedly being left in a car in scorching temperatures on the Spanish holiday island of Gran Canaria.
The child was in a serious condition when he was taken to Fuerteventura General Hospital on Saturday. He was then airlifted to a public hospital on Gran Canaria.
He died in the early hours of Sunday at the Materno Infantil University Hospital in Las Palmas, the island's capital. Local reports say the boy was left inside the vehicle, but no further details have been released.
Heatwave alert
The Canary Islands have been hit by a heatwave, with temperatures reaching 45C at the weekend. Gran Canaria was on red alert today, and parts of neighbouring Tenerife were on orange alert due to the high temperatures.
It is unclear where the boy was from.
Similar incidents
Last month, an 18-month-old girl named Sofia died after being left inside a licensed nursery transport vehicle near Lisbon for seven hours. The vehicle was parked near the Cristo Rei shrine in Almada, and temperatures reached 30C. The girl was found in critical condition and pronounced dead at the scene.
In June, two children aged two and four were found dead in their family's car in Carpentras, southeastern France, during a heatwave.
