A man has been convicted for his role in abducting a 23-year-old and forcing him to strip naked in a cemetery. Jamie Cunningham, 30, and Steven Quill, 37, were found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow of abduction and attempted murder following an incident in December 2021.
The victim, Keeran McCaffery, was lured to Broomlands Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire, under the pretence of earning £30 for a job. Instead, he was punched by a stranger and dragged into a BMW by four masked assailants. During the 12-mile journey, he was beaten and threatened, with his captors demanding the whereabouts of a friend.
Mr McCaffery told the court he feared for his life, stating, 'I thought I was going to die. They were punching the hell out of me. I thought I was going to get stabbed.' At one point, he attempted to escape by opening the car door on the Erskine Bridge, but the vehicle continued to Langfaulds Cemetery in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire.
In the dark graveyard, the victim was stripped naked, though later given back a pair of jogging bottoms. He eventually sought help and was taken to hospital with significant injuries, including bleeding around his left eye that has not fully healed. The attempted murder charge stated he was assaulted to the danger of his life, causing severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
Cunningham and Quill had pleaded not guilty but were convicted. They will be sentenced next month.
