Three women were stabbed in what authorities describe as a random knife attack in the Porte de Clichy area of northwest Paris on Monday. One of the victims is pregnant.
Victims rushed to hospital
According to BFMTV, two of the three women are in critical condition and receiving medical treatment. Emergency services treated the victims at the scene before they were rushed to hospital.
Suspect detained
A 31-year-old male suspect was apprehended at the scene. He is believed to be suffering from mental health problems and was reported to be carrying two knives. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that the suspect was detained by an off-duty police officer who witnessed the attack. Nunez said the suspect made "incoherent statements" and cautioned against drawing premature conclusions regarding his motive.
Disturbing footage
Video circulating on social media appears to show the attacker running through the streets brandishing knives. In one moment, the man lunges at a woman with a knife as he runs past her. Bystanders can be seen fleeing before a group manages to restrain him using a chair. Blood is visible on his right hand, and the knives are seen discarded on a zebra crossing.
