A 16-year-old girl was stabbed on a bus in St Helens on Tuesday afternoon, with Tesco staff rushing to her aid before paramedics arrived. Police received a report of the attack on Eskdale Avenue at around 4.30pm on October 13.
The victim was taken to hospital, where she remains in a serious but stable condition. A 20-year-old man from St Helens was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of section 18 wounding. Police believe the suspect and victim knew each other.
Staff praised for their help
The force has praised staff at the nearby Tesco Express on Bowness Avenue, who helped the victim before emergency services arrived at the scene.
Superintendent Col Rooney said: “This was a serious incident that has left a teenage girl in hospital with a leg injury. Although we are still in the early stages of our inquiries, we believe that the suspect and victim are known to each other and this was not a random attack.”
“Emergency services attended the scene promptly and a suspect was quickly identified and arrested. I hope the community is reassured at our response to this concerning incident and it shows how seriously we take these reports.”
Appeal for information
Superintendent Rooney thanked members of the public and Tesco staff who came to the victim’s aid, adding: “The use of knives and any weapons is reckless and will not be tolerated. It can have tragic consequences, not only for the victim and their family but also for the offenders involved.”
“Although we’ve made an arrest, we are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward as our investigation continues.”
