Protests erupted in northeastern India after a 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered, with an iron rod left in her body. Demonstrators blocked a major highway, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible.
Incident Details
The girl was found dead inside her home in Hailakandi town on Saturday, August 1. Her head and face were smashed, and she reportedly had an iron bar inserted into her before she died. The incident only became public knowledge two days later.
The teenager had gone to a relative's house with her family to attend an event, but after an argument with a cousin, she returned home alone. It was at this point that she was allegedly gang-raped and bludgeoned to death.
Police Investigation
Police have not officially confirmed that a sexual assault took place, but an investigation has been launched, and five people have been arrested. Senior superintendent of police Amitabh Sinha told reporters: "The family claims she was sexually assaulted, but we are waiting for the post-mortem report before drawing any conclusions. We are investigating the matter thoroughly."
A large contingent of police was sent to the scene, and the blockade on National Highway 6, between Assam and Mizoram, left hundreds of vehicles stranded for several hours.
