Social media role in crime and arrest

Detectives allege that the girl was contacted over social media by one of the men, who asked her to meet him. She was then allegedly taken to a location where the rape took place, NDTV reports.

Video of the alleged offence was circulated on social media by one of the accused, alerting the girl's mother who reported it to the police.

Arrests and investigation

Two of the men accused were arrested within two hours of the report, with the third detained later the same day, according to the police. Police seized the suspects' mobile phones and a statement has been taken from the girl, who has also been medically examined.

The alleged rape is reported to have sparked protests among tribes in India as the girl belongs to a tribal group.
