An 18-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty in the sea at Camber Sands beach in East Sussex.
Incident details
Emergency services were called to the beach shortly before 7pm on Sunday after reports that three people had got into trouble in the water. An extensive search operation was launched, and two of the three, a 16-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man, were able to reach safety. The third person, an 18-year-old man, was recovered from the water at approximately 7.30pm.
Sussex Police said: "Sadly, despite lifesaving attempts by paramedics at the scene, he was pronounced deceased a short while later. His next of kin have been informed, and our thoughts are with them. Inquiries in the area remain ongoing and an increased emergency presence is visible at this time."
Coastguard response
A coastguard spokesman said: "At 6.37pm last night, HM Coastguard was called to an incident at Camber Sands, East Sussex."
An HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter was sent, along with Pett Level lifeboat, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Rye Bay and Romney Marsh, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service.
