A 19-year-old man has died after entering the water at Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving police, paramedics, firefighters, mountain rescue volunteers, and the Wales Air Ambulance.
Incident Details
The incident occurred on Saturday, June 27, near the Ystradfellte waterfalls section of the national park. Emergency services were called at approximately 2:14 PM after reports of a casualty who had entered the water. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, the teenager could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency Response
Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team issued a statement: "On Saturday, June 27, we were requested to assist in a multi agency incident in the waterfalls area recovering a person who'd entered the water. Sadly an extensive resuscitation operation was not successful." The team worked alongside Dyfed-Powys Police, Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, a hazardous area response team, Wales Air Ambulance, and a National Park Warden. Off-duty paramedics also assisted.
A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson said: "We received a call for assistance at approximately 2.15pm on Saturday, following a concern for the welfare of a 19-year-old man who had entered the water at Ystradfellte waterfalls. Officers attended, along with colleagues from the fire and rescue service and ambulance. Despite the efforts of all involved, a 19-year-old man sadly died at the scene. Next of kin have been informed, as well as HM Coroner."
Fire and Rescue Involvement
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Swansea Central and Abercrave Fire Stations were mobilised at 2:14 PM, supported by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The crews extricated the casualty from the water. A fire service representative confirmed: "Despite the efforts of all involved, a 19-year-old man sadly died at the scene. Next of kin have been informed, as well as HM Coroner. The crews left the scene at 5.50pm."
Air Ambulance Response
Wales Air Ambulance confirmed their Dafen-based helicopter attended the incident. A spokesperson said: "I can confirm the Wales Air Ambulance helicopter attended a medical incident in that region on June 27. Our Dafen-based crew was allocated at 2.13pm and arrived at the scene at 2.30pm. Our involvement concluded at 4:10pm."
Condolences
Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team extended "deepest condolences to all family and friends." The coroner has been informed, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
