Queensland police have charged a 16-year-old boy with stabbing a 17-year-old schoolmate at the Islamic College of Brisbane in Karawatha, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred around 11:45 am on Tuesday, according to police.
Details of the altercation
Police allege the 16-year-old used a small knife to stab the older boy during an altercation at the school, located south of Brisbane. The two teenagers are known to each other, a police spokesperson confirmed. After the stabbing, the alleged perpetrator fled on foot but was located shortly afterward in a vehicle on Gowan Road in Stretton.
Charges and court proceedings
The 16-year-old has been charged with one count of committing an act intended to maim, disfigure, or disable, and one count of unlawful possession of weapons category M. He is scheduled to appear before Richlands Children's Court on Wednesday.
Victim's condition
The 17-year-old victim was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital with what police described as life-threatening injuries. A hospital spokesperson confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the boy was in stable condition in the intensive care unit.
School response
A spokesperson for the Islamic College of Brisbane said the school implemented a brief lockdown after calling emergency services. Once the situation was contained, students and staff were sent home. The school is cooperating with authorities and has made counselling and support services available to all members of the school community. On Monday, police charged a 15-year-old boy from Kanimbla in far-north Queensland after he allegedly stabbed another boy at a Cairns school. That teenager was charged with one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, refused bail, and was due to appear in Cairns Children's Court on Tuesday.
