Student teacher glassed partner in Newcastle pub

A student teacher has been sentenced after glassing her partner in a busy Newcastle city centre pub, leaving him with cuts to his ear and head that required stitches.

Jamie Henderson, 20, was drinking with her boyfriend in The Five Swans when they began discussing the end of their relationship. Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard she "struggled to control her emotions" and poured the contents of her glass over the victim's head before repeatedly striking him with it.

Shocking CCTV footage showed the attack and Henderson being subsequently restrained. The victim, who refused to make a statement to police, was taken to hospital with cuts to his ear and the back of his head, all of which needed stitches.

Attack in city centre pub

Jasmine Dodds, prosecuting, said Henderson and the victim had been drinking together on December 20 last year and had ended up in The Five Swans Wetherspoons Pub in Newcastle City Centre.

Miss Dodds continued: "From the CCTV, you can see the defendant hit the victim over the head with a glass at the table. At first, she throws the contents of the glass over him then forcibly hits him with the glass. She hits him multiple times to the side of the face until she's restrained."

Miss Dodds added: "There were was a cut to the back of the victim's head. It was quite a nasty gash on the back of his head. It was stitched and cleaned-up. He also had stitches to cuts on his ear. He had stitches to various parts of his ear."

Court hearing and sentence

Henderson, of Chathill Terrace in Walker, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court earlier this month to plead guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The court heard she had no past convictions and had been forced to quit her teaching degree.

Neil Connell, defending, said Henderson "struggled to regulate her emotions in a relationship." Mr Connell told magistrates: "She finds it difficult to explain how she reacted and why she did. Her and her partner had been drinking heavily. There had been a discussion about the end of their relationship. She can't explain why she reacted how she did. She had, sadly, experienced trauma in her young life. She witnessed domestic violence when she was a child."

Magistrates gave Henderson an 18-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work. She must also pay £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
