Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo has publicly rejected an apology from Argentina assistant Roberto Ayala over their post-World Cup final altercation and says he has submitted new evidence to FIFA's ongoing investigation.
Ayala was seen striking Olmo during the violent conclusion of the showpiece affair in New York City. Ayala has since apologised but insisted his physical action was "a push" rather than a strike.
Olmo's response
Olmo, speaking to Diari de Terrassa, said: "Someone who confesses to being sorry, but justifies a punch by claiming that it was a response to something I said, is probably not sorry...because I didn't say anything to him. So I don't need him to apologise."
He added: "What really defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to accept it with humility, truth and dignity. When my children, my family and so many fans watch the game, I want them to be proud of how we compete, how we win and, above all, of our behaviour.
"The importance of football means we players are role models for children and new generations, and that carries a great responsibility. But thankfully, what really matters is that we experienced an incredible World Cup, the world saw it and we are world champions after a lot of hard work."
Infantino letter controversy
The row comes after a leaked letter from FIFA president Gianni Infantino to Argentine FA president Claudio Tapia praised Argentina's "professionalism" during the tournament. The letter was sent while FIFA is still investigating the MetLife Stadium melee, which also saw Leandro Parades and Nahuel Molina appear to physically attack Spanish players after the final whistle.
Infantino wrote: "Please send my sincere congratulations to all who have contributed to this magnificent result: to the players, to coach Lionel Scaloni, as well as to the coaching and medical staff and, of course, to the many fans who have accompanied and encouraged the team throughout the competition.
"These victories are always the fruit of constant work, professionalism and attention to detail, but also of passion, commitment and love for this wonderful sport."
