South Korea landslide kills one after record rainfall

One person has died and four others were injured after torrential rains pounded southern South Korea since Saturday, triggering a landslide in the city of Geoje, officials confirmed.

The interior and safety ministry said Geoje received an 800mm (31in) deluge over the weekend, which caused a landslide. By 6pm on Monday, the cumulative rainfall total had reached 912mm.

Rescue and casualties

Police and firefighters rescued three residents from an apartment building hit by the landslide. One was found in cardiac arrest and later pronounced dead at a hospital, according to Yonhap. Two people were injured in Geoje and two others in nearby cities.

Geoje received 805.7mm of rain from Saturday through to 8am on Monday, while neighbouring Tongyeong received 671.9mm. Other parts of South Gyeongsang province received between 240mm and 340mm.

Evacuations and power cuts

The heavy rains forced about 390 people to evacuate and caused power outages at about 3,580 houses. Twelve schools and kindergartens have reportedly flooded, and firefighters have received dozens of calls for help with rain-related damage.

The Korea Herald quoted weather officials on Tuesday as saying the province had received an entire summer's rainfall in just two days, with record daily totals in Geoje and Tongyeong.

Government response

Prime minister Han Seong-sook instructed police, firefighters and other authorities to make every effort to rescue stranded residents and others at risk.

In the Philippines, heavy monsoon rains flooded key streets in Manila, suspending government work and shifting schools to online learning on Monday. About three weeks of rains and a storm left at least 23 people dead, mostly from landslides and floods, and affected 5 million people, including nearly 25,000 still in emergency shelters. Among the dead were 10 people whose houses were buried by a landslide in Baguio on 9 August; three others were rescued alive with injuries.
