Son jailed for life for murdering mother after hearing voices

A man who murdered his mother after hearing voices telling him to harm her has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 16 years.

Michael Bowen, 35, killed his mother Janet Bowen, 65, at their home in Yateley on New Year's Eve before fleeing the scene. Police were called to the address in Maple Gardens at 9.40am on December 31 after Mrs Bowen was found dead. Following a major investigation, Bowen was arrested and later charged with murder.

Court hears of argument and voices

A court heard the pair had argued after Bowen smashed a window at the property. He later claimed he had been hearing voices in his head which told him to attack his mother.

Conviction and sentencing

After a trial at Salisbury Crown Court, he was convicted of murder and handed a life sentence at Winchester Crown Court on Friday (October 9).

Detective's statement

Detective Superintendent Ross Toms, who led the investigation, said: “Our thoughts, first and foremost, are with the family of Janet Bowen.

“This was a tragic incident and not only have Janet’s family had to endure what happened on New Year’s Eve, but they have had to relive it in court.

“I would like to praise her family for their bravery and courage when they were dealing with unimaginable pain and grief. I sincerely hope that they can now try and move forward and rebuild their lives.”
