South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) is currently dealing with 14 wildfires, with six locations identified as "areas of significant focus" on Sunday, August 16. The six areas are Blaenavon, Dowlais in Merthyr Tydfil, Darran Park in Ferndale, Cwm in Ebbw Vale, Wattsville, and Treherbert.
Military and aerial support deployed
The service is using helicopter and drone support, while the ongoing response is supported by several fire and rescue services from across the UK. Teams from the British Army are deployed on the ground, creating fire breaks and clearing vegetation.
Military assistance is also helping with logistics, including transporting large quantities of firefighting water to the incident ground. This effort is proving highly effective and is helping sustain operations during this period of heightened demand.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Director of Service Delivery, Matthew Jones, said: "The support provided by our military colleagues during this wildfire has been exceptional. Their professionalism, commitment, and willingness to work alongside our firefighters have made a real difference in what has been a challenging and demanding incident."

Public urged to help prevent further fires
SWFRS is asking residents, landowners, and visitors to report any suspicious behaviour or deliberate fire setting to police by calling 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. They also advise only calling 999 for new emergencies, avoiding disposable barbecues, and not using firepits, garden incinerators, or fireworks.
People affected by smoke should close windows and doors and seek appropriate medical guidance if their health is affected. The public is advised to follow advice from emergency services and local authorities, avoid incident areas, and follow local traffic diversions. Drones should not be flown near incidents as they can disrupt operational activity.
