Massive Explosion Follows Multi-Vehicle Crash on Hume Highway
A driver remains unaccounted for and six people have been injured following a seven-lorry pile-up on the Hume Highway in New South Wales, Australia, which culminated in a massive explosion and fireball. The incident occurred near the town of Breadalbane just after 5 a.m. local time on Tuesday, June 30.
According to New South Wales Fire and Rescue (NSWFRS), the chain reaction began when two heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) collided on the highway. These two lorries then ploughed into five others that were stationary at a roadside rest stop, triggering the enormous blast.
Dangerous Cargo Fuelled the Blaze
The contents of the lorries created a perfect storm for the explosion and subsequent fire. A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed that one of the trucks was carrying eight tonnes of butane cans. “Another was transporting resin, a third contained memory foam, and a fourth was packed with alcohol, fuelling the resulting fire and explosions,” the spokesman said.
The combination of these highly flammable materials led to a fireball that engulfed the scene, making rescue and recovery efforts challenging for emergency services.
Emergency Response and Ongoing Search
Emergency crews arrived promptly at the scene to extinguish the blaze and search for survivors. Six individuals sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. However, one driver remains unaccounted for, prompting an ongoing search operation.
The Hume Highway, a major arterial road connecting Sydney and Melbourne, experienced significant disruptions as authorities closed sections of the highway to facilitate the emergency response and investigate the cause of the crash.
This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
