Liverpool City Council has confirmed that the play area at Sefton Park suffered further vandalism and anti-social behaviour while it was awaiting repair work. The playground, near the Lark Lane entrance, was previously closed after vandals ripped up large sections of its rubber flooring and caused widespread damage.
Further damage delays repairs
Repairs to the surface had been scheduled for last month, but the specialist materials involved meant the work was heavily dependent on weather conditions. High temperatures prevented the new flooring from bonding properly, according to a council spokesperson.
The spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, while we were waiting for temperatures to fall, the play area was further damaged by acts of vandalism and anti-social behaviour."
Specialist contractor to be brought in
The extent of the damage means a specialist contractor is now needed to complete a range of repairs. The contractor is due to be on site on Monday, August 24. The playground remains closed, with a padlocked gate and a sign informing visitors of the upcoming work.
The spokesperson added: "We apologise to families who have been unable to use the facility and share their frustration, as this kind of vandalism is completely unacceptable."
Families left without popular facility
The latest damage means families have been left without access to one of the park's most popular facilities for longer than originally expected. When the ECHO previously visited, large areas of rubber flooring had been ripped up and strewn across the play area. Swings had also been removed from play equipment, though it was unclear whether they were taken by vandals or removed for repairs.
One mother previously told the ECHO that her toddler had been "really upset" after arriving at the park expecting to play. She also said the playground should match the quality of the wider Sefton Park, describing the park as "the jewel in Liverpool's crown".
The council has apologised to affected families and said alternative play areas remain available at Princes Park, Aigburth Vale and Greenbank Park. The spokesperson added: "We know how important and popular the Sefton Park play area is for local families. As part of our Play Improvement Programme, which has already delivered more than £1 million of investment in play facilities across the city, the site is also scheduled to receive a full refurbishment next year."
