A 33-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing a passenger on a Charlotte commuter train on Friday afternoon, marking the second such attack in less than four months. The incident occurred on a train operated by the Charlotte Area Transit System, according to police.
The suspect, Oscar Solarzano, was taken into custody and charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and other offences. Police said the victim suffered a stab wound and was taken to hospital in critical but stable condition. Solarzano is being held without bond and is due to appear in court on Monday.
Court documents indicate that Solarzano is in the United States illegally and had previously been deported. An arrest warrant states that he appeared intoxicated and challenged the victim to a fight before the attack. No attorney has been listed for Solarzano in online records.
The stabbing comes less than four months after Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was killed in an unrelated knife attack on a Charlotte commuter train. A suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr, has been charged with first-degree murder in that case. The incidents have drawn attention from political figures, including President Donald Trump, who commented on the latest stabbing on his Truth Social platform.
