Firefighters are tackling a major blaze on Saddleworth Moor, with a road closure in place. The fire broke out near Holmfirth Road in Oldham, and crews worked through the night to bring it under control.
Progress and Road Closure
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said crews have made good progress in extinguishing the fire but remain at the scene damping down and monitoring hotspots. A road closure is in place on Holmfirth Road in both directions between Dovestone and Greenfield reservoirs.
Travel service Inrix reported Bank Lane closed in both directions due to the serious fire between A635 Holmfirth Road and Bradbury's Lane.
Witness Account
One witness told the M.E.N.: "Huge fire at Saddleworth Moor tonight, we saw and phoned the emergency services at 10.30pm, fire brigade arrived about 11pm. Approximately 7 fire engines there when we left and the road had been closed in both directions due to the fire being so close to the road."
Context of Summer Wildfires
The blaze follows wildfires that have ravaged Greater Manchester and parts of the UK over the summer. Major fires erupted at Dovestone and Tintwistle earlier this summer, damaging nearly 1,000 acres of land.
Emergency services have urged people to avoid the area while they respond to the incident.
