Russia launched another devastating attack on Ukraine on Monday, September 28, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 80 across the country, emergency officials said. The strikes hit Kyiv, Dnipro, Odesa and other parts of Ukraine, with a drone striking the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv, killing two people. One person's body was recovered from the rubble later in the evening.
Academy calls attack 'barbarity'
In a statement, the academy called the attack "barbarity" aimed at "peaceful people who were simply at their workplaces". The strikes come as Russia has begun hitting Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with faster, high-flying jet drones.
Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin continues to test NATO countries through verbal threats and hybrid warfare. The Russian embassy in the UK has threatened to use nuclear weapons following the airing of a documentary that depicts how a conflict with the UK could play out.
NATO scrambles jets
In Eastern Europe, NATO has once again been forced to scramble fighter jets as Russia launched another massive attack on Ukraine. Two Spanish F-18 fighter jets were sent into the skies overnight after Romania's Ministry of National Defence detected an aerial target close to the country's border with Ukraine.
The wave of Russian drone strikes across Ukraine on Monday was among the most persistent since the start of the war, pounding the heart of the Ukrainian capital and other cities. At least 10 people were killed in Monday's strikes, with many more injured.
