Alwen Hughes' Death Confirmed
Alwen Hughes, the wife of disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris, passed away in the summer of 2024 at the age of 92, just over a year after her husband's death. The cause was a stroke, compounded by vascular dementia and the fragility of old age.
Hughes had stood by Harris throughout his trial and imprisonment, attending court every day alongside their daughter, Bindi. The couple were married for 65 years before Harris died of neck cancer in May 2023 at age 93.
Who Was Alwen Hughes?
Born in Wales, Hughes was a sculptress and jeweller who met Harris while both studied art at the University of Western Australia. They married in March 1958 and had daughter Bindi in 1964. Known for her eccentric style, she famously had a poodle as a bridesmaid at her wedding.
Following Harris' 2014 conviction for indecent assault against underage girls, Hughes remained loyal. Singer Vince Hill expressed concern for her health in 2014, noting she was "very poorly" and suffered from arthritis and hip problems.
Documentary Exposes Harris' Crimes
Prime Video's new documentary, Rolf Harris: Primetime Predator, examines how Harris hid his decades of abuse. Harris was charged with 12 counts of indecent assault in 2013, sentenced to nearly six years in prison in 2014, and released in 2017 before his death in 2023.
