Lachie Perrem, 25, was left fighting for his life after a robot vacuum exploded at his home in Brabham, Perth, on July 2. He suffered burns to 75 per cent of his body and was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he has undergone multiple surgeries.
Mother reveals battery leak caused explosion
His mother, Fiona Perrem, said: "He had a robo vac and unbeknownst to him the battery had a leak. When he started cooking something ignited and caused an explosion. He was at the forefront of it all."
The device has been sent to the state’s building and energy office for investigation. Photos after the blast showed windows blown out, walls blackened, and damage from the kitchen to the living room, with furniture destroyed and floorboards charred.
Dangers of lithium-ion batteries
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services Western Australia warned that lithium-ion batteries, common in robot vacuums, can be dangerous. A spokesperson said: "When lithium-ion batteries fail, they can undergo thermal runaway, which can be violent bursting of one or multiple battery cells, hissing and release of toxic, flammable and explosive gases and an intense, self-sustaining fire."
Mr Perrem has had three surgeries including wound debridement and skin grafts to his fingers, left elbow and torso. He temporarily lost his voice, with more surgeries expected.
Positive recovery update
On July 20, Ms Perrem updated a GoFundMe page: "Another positive update on Lachie's recovery. His grafts are healing well, and the physio team is extremely happy with his progress, especially with the movement in his hands. Today was another big milestone as his feeding tube was removed."
She added: "His face and neck are healing really well too. Every step forward is a huge achievement, and we're so grateful for the incredible care he's receiving and for everyone's ongoing support."
