Angela Rayner's GMB Interview Sparks Viewer Fury
Rayner GMB Interview Sparks Viewer Outrage

Angela Rayner's appearance on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday (11 August) drew heavy criticism from viewers, who voiced their frustration on social media. The Housing Secretary was questioned by hosts Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley about the government's handling of the early prisoner release scheme, following an emotional interview with Debbie Adlam, mother of murdered PC Andrew Harper.

Rayner Defends Government Stance

Speaking from Nottingham, Rayner responded to Richard Madeley's assertion that the Labour government shouldn't be "messing around with people's lives." She acknowledged the public's anger, saying, "No, I totally understand that and I understand the way Debbie has been traumatised. I can understand the rage, and the outrage of the public."

The interview came after it was revealed that PC Harper's killers, Jesse Cole and Albert Bowers, could be released in January after serving only half of their 13-year sentences. Rayner clarified that the prime minister is "looking at a range of options" to address prison overcrowding and prevent their early release, emphasizing that keeping "the most abhorrent serious offenders in prison" is a priority.

When asked if the prime minister had "bent to the public will," Rayner stated, "The prime minister is not accepting the current circumstances. We're looking at solutions now, at how we can keep the most sinister, abhorrent criminals in prison."

The interview took place hours after Debbie Adlam confirmed Downing Street had contacted her, assuring her that the prime minister is doing everything possible to prevent the early release of her son's killers. However, viewers were unconvinced, taking to X to express their frustration with both Rayner and Andy Burnham's Labour government.

One user wrote, "The only reason there was a 'change of plan' overnight and Mrs Harper received the call saying he was 'still trying' was probably because Burnham knew she was going on #gmb today." Another added, "So dumb. Release a violent criminal so you can imprison another one #GMB." A third commented, "@GMB tax avoider Rayner given air time to spew nothing but rubbish."
