Rangers fans have slammed the panic button after a winless start to the season, with some calling for former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers to replace Derek McInnes following the Europa League exit.
Fan fury after Europa League exit
The European qualifiers are behind us with the Premier Sports Cup taking centre stage - but the fallout at Ibrox rumbles on. Winless Derek McInnes has to pick up the pieces of the Europa League exit at the hands of Jagiellona with cup holders St Mirren next up on Sunday.
But some fans have already seen enough and want the boss gone after just four games. John Clelland, Robroyston said: "Derek McInnes should have stayed at Hearts. He will be ranting at referees, linesman and the opposition till he loses his job."
Wild succession plan
Francis William Jackson put forward a wild succession plan - with former Celtic boss and current Al-Qadsiah gaffer Brendan Rodgers named as a potential successor: "I stated last week that this second choice manager should be relieved of his duties NOW. If the board have any consideration for the fans put him out of our misery now. I can think of several coaches who would do better, go get Brendan Rodgers."
Adam Peters, Bathgate said: "Rangers should have emptied all the obstacles in the recruitment department to bring Gerrard back. Owners have made exactly the same mistakes as last season. If McInnes loved Rangers he’d walk."
Recruitment in the firing line
The recruitment department is firmly in the firing line with the blame game ramping up. Drew Ferguson, Oban said: "Let's get one thing straight Jagiellona were the better team on Thursday. They were slicker, more skilful and more creative than Rangers and this simply shows Rangers do not have the quality and creativity needed to compete in the league or indeed at Europa league level. They are a Conference league level team and until the owners recruit REAL QUALITY nothing will change and it will be a long long season."
Liam Birney, Paisley said: "Rangers with their state-of-the-art recruitment department spend multi millions on new players and actually look worse than last season, if that's possible. Celtic with no recruitment department have two new players in the side and are already 4 points clear. That speaks volumes for the quality over quantity argument!"
Willie Mercer, Dumfries said: "The issue with Rangers - not just this season, but the last 2 seasons at least - has been the standard of recruitment. Raskin apart, there has not been one player signed (not on loan) in this period that has been a stand out success for the club. We have signed project players, not first team ready, players not getting games for their teams and players with restricted game time with their teams through injury. Not to mention the loan players, brought in under the same criteria as above. Then there has been the free transfers that were not exactly being head hunted by other teams. The result of this type/level of recruitment is that the Rangers squad is now bloated with average and journeyman players. Players that even the great Walter Smith would find trouble getting a tune out of."
Style of play questioned
Scott Gowers, Edinburgh said: "It is pointless Rangers signing any new players especially strikers as until Rangers style of play changes any player that sign would be on a hiding to nothing. Rangers simply are not creative enough to get the ball to the strikers and when they do the strikers are basically marked out of the game because there is no flair and just midfielders and defenders scared to take someone on leading to play being slow and boring allowing the other clubs to be in good defensive positions during rare meaningful attacks. Why are Rangers players scared to take on players? I believe that a lack of trust in their fellow team mates to be the reason as knowing if they lose the ball they will likely get the blame for other teams scoring. Rangers lose far too many goals by sloppy passes and others being out of position when this happens. One player can't change a team and even a Messi or Ronaldo would get pelters from fans as it's the style of play and lack of trust in team mates which is the real problem Rangers have."
But Neil Renton, Leith couldn't resist a taunt directed at the panicked Ibrox faithful: "What a start to the season for Rangers. The only thing they’ll win will be a comedy award at the Fringe."
