A large crowd gathered on the Gurnos estate in Merthyr Tydfil on Thursday afternoon, August 6, following the arrest of a 23-year-old man in connection with an allegation of causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a child. Videos showed police vehicles and officers directing people of all ages who had assembled on Poplar Way and Chestnut Way.
Shops Closed Early
The disturbance lasted about four hours, forcing several local shops to close early. South Wales Police stated that officers attended an address on Chestnut Way at 12:40pm after a report of a disturbance, where a large group had gathered. No arrests were made at the protest, and a Section 35 notice is now in place.
Arrest Linked to Protests
Gwent Police confirmed that the arrest was made under their jurisdiction and is linked to the protests. A spokesperson said: "Officers investigating an allegation of causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a child have arrested a 23-year-old man from the Hengoed area. He is currently in police custody for questioning and enquiries continue."
