Daryl Berman, 72, is due to be sentenced today for the murder of her husband of 30 years, David Berman, 84, at their home in Prestwich. The sentencing hearing is taking place at Minshull Street Crown Court before Judge Tina Landale.
Details of the Incident
Mr Berman suffered a fatal chest wound during the incident at their home on Butterstile Lane in March last year. He also sustained a 'defensive wound' to his finger. Prosecutors argued that Berman deliberately stabbed her husband 'for a reason known only to her'. Berman claimed throughout two trials that her husband's injuries and death were 'accidental', asserting that he fell over in their kitchen and landed on a 'little paring knife' she had used for her lunch.
Trials and Verdict
Jurors in an earlier trial were unable to reach verdicts. Following a week-long retrial at Minshull Street Crown Court, jurors found Berman guilty of murder. The conviction came after prosecutors presented evidence that the wound was inconsistent with an accidental fall.
