Arsenal supporter Piers Morgan has called for Manchester City to be relegated from the Premier League and stripped of what he called "fraudulently 'won'" titles after the club was found guilty of breaching 114 financial regulations. The Premier League's accusations relate to alleged rule violations spanning 2009 to 2018, with City cleared of just a single charge brought against them.
Morgan demands harshest punishment
Taking to X, Morgan wrote: "Let's be clear: Manchester City have been found guilty of being the biggest cheats in English football history, and the punishment must fit their crimes. At very minimum, they must be relegated from Premier League and stripped of all fraudulently 'won' titles."
City continue to protest their innocence but face the prospect of severe punishment should their appeal prove unsuccessful, including expulsion from the top flight. The appeals procedure is already underway, though speculation surrounding potential sanctions against City continues to mount.
Chairman's open letter
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak addressed supporters through an open letter posted on the club's official website on Saturday afternoon. His statement declared: "I have been part of this club for 18 years. I have had the privilege to stand with you in the Etihad, at Wembley, and in Istanbul."
"This club matters to me, and you have shown and told me – time and time again - how much Manchester City matters to you. This is why I am writing to you today. Following Friday's media reporting, many of you will have spent your evening answering questions and responding to messages from friends, family and colleagues. So have I."
Al Mubarak added: "The Premier League process still has a long way to run, and our confidence and intent in proving the club's innocence is just as strong as when this began. There are so many things that I would like to be able to share with you to help you understand why we feel so confident in our position. But the strict confidentiality of the legal process and our determination to respect it means I cannot do that at the moment."
Appeal and legal threats
This marks City's second formal statement on the matter, while the Premier League have remained silent as proceedings continue to develop amid plans for an appeal. Should the appeal prove unsuccessful, Premier League clubs are reportedly preparing to pursue legal action, with Arsenal and Tottenham among those believed to have sufficient grounds to launch lawsuits, potentially seeking £200 million in damages.
