Emergency crews were called to the railway line in Wigan just before midnight on Wednesday after reports of a casualty on the tracks. A person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency response and train disruption

Services were called to the train tracks between Wigan and Preston at around 11.53pm on Wednesday evening (September 30). The train line was blocked, and trains were either cancelled or delayed as the emergency crews responded.

Investigations were carried out on the scene before services returned to normal at around 1.22am this morning, reports Lancs Live.

Police statement and ongoing enquiries

No further information about the person has been released by the British Transport Police at this stage. In a statement, a BTP spokesperson said: "We were called to the railway line in Wigan at 11.27pm on September 30 to a report of a casualty on the tracks."

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding their death."
