A pensioner has been taken to hospital with a serious head injury after he was attacked in a park in St Helens. The man, in his 70s, was the victim of an "unprovoked" attack in Sherdley Park.
Attack details
At around 4pm on Tuesday, August 11, the pensioner was reportedly attacked by a man who got out of a grey/green coloured vehicle near the playing fields towards Elton Head Road. The unsuspecting victim was taken to hospital with a serious head injury.
Prior to the incident, which was reported to Merseyside Police, the victim was reportedly approached by a group of youths who shouted at him as he walked around Sherdley Park.
Police appeal
Police launched an investigation and are now appealing for anyone with further information to contact them. Detective Inspector Ruth Tickle said: "This was an unprovoked assault on a man in his 70s who suffered a serious head injury.
"Everyone should be able go out and feel safe in their own neighbourhood without the fear of being attacked and we are working to find whoever was responsible.
"I would appeal to anyone who was on Elton Head Road yesterday and saw what happened or the vehicle involved to come forward and speak to us.
"I also urge people who live near Sherdley Park to check your CCTV or doorbell footage from yesterday evening to see if it has captured anything suspicious, no matter how small, as any information may help with the investigation.
"We are determined to find the person responsible and an investigation is ongoing. Please come forward if you can assist our enquiries."
