A 16-year-old boy of Moroccan origin has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape and robbery of an 80-year-old woman in the French city of Rennes. The attack is reported to have occurred on July 4 at around 2am, as the victim was returning home from an evening with her daughter.
Details of the alleged attack
According to police, the suspect approached the woman on a scooter and insisted on taking her home, but she refused. He then followed her to her home in the Colombier area, where he allegedly pinned her against the wall and raped her before fleeing with a piece of gold jewellery.
Arrest and charges
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday, July 21. Rennes public prosecutor Frédéric Teillet stated that the boy was found in possession of cocaine packaged for resale. He said: "Found in possession of cocaine packaged for resale, he stated that he arrived in France a few months ago and was selling narcotics in the city center."
The suspect, believed to have been born in Morocco in June 2010 and living legally in France, was charged with rape of a vulnerable person and theft of a vulnerable person. He has been placed in pre-trial detention.
Previous arrest
Local media reported that the suspect had been arrested previously in May for a drug offence. Mr Teillet confirmed the earlier arrest, saying: "For a drug offence for which the prosecutor's office issued him a summons to appear before a juvenile judge in October."
