Spain star Dani Olmo has refused to accept an apology from Argentina coach Roberto Ayala and accused him of lying about what happened following the World Cup final.
Post-match violence
There were violent clashes on the pitch after the full-time whistle crowned Spain as champions in New Jersey. Ferran Torres' goal in extra-time sealed a 1-0 win, but the winning moment was tarnished by the fighting. Argentina's Leandro Paredes kicked and punched as he shoved Eric Garcia to the ground and grappled with Gavi, while Nahuel Molina appeared to have thrown a punch at Rodri.
There was also a flashpoint involving Ayala and Olmo, with the Argentina assistant coach caught on camera putting his hand around the Barcelona midfielder's neck.
Olmo's response
FIFA are investigating the ugly scenes, which could prompt suspensions and fines. Olmo spoke out after Ayala said he reacted to something he had heard. Olmo told newspaper Diari de Terrassa: "Someone who says they're sorry, but justifies a punch by saying it was a response to a comment, is surely not sorry, because he is lying."
He added: "I didn't say anything to him, so he doesn't need to apologise. What truly defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to acknowledge it with humility, honesty and dignity." Olmo also stressed the responsibility of players as role models for children.
Ayala's apology
Ayala had previously said: "Of course I'm sorry. Given my position, I cannot allow a feeling, or whatever I might receive from the other party, to affect my mood or my actions." He described the incident as more of a shove than a punch, and added: "It was a reaction to something he said, but that's it. If I see him, I'll obviously apologise to him in person."
FIFA have appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess the scenes, likely resulting in fines for Argentina's failure to control their players and staff. Alan Shearer commented on the BBC: "There is no place or space for that... there is a way to lose. Too many times we have seen that from Argentina." Argentina's Enzo Fernandez was sent off during the game after receiving a second yellow card.
