A 17-year-old Norwegian tourist, Nikoline Piwoni Høie, was killed in a suspected hit-and-run on the Costa del Sol in the early hours of Monday, July 9, 2026, after celebrating her national team's World Cup victory. The incident occurred on the A-7 motorway near La Cala de Mijas, approximately 20 miles from Marbella in southern Spain. The driver did not stop at the scene.
Night Out Turns Tragic
Nikoline was last seen alive at the Funky Buddha nightclub in Puerto Banús, where she had been celebrating Norway's 2-1 win over Brazil in the World Cup with friends. She was reported missing after the night out and was later found on the road by emergency services at around 5:20 am. Despite efforts, she could not be saved.
The Spanish Civil Guard is treating the death as a hit-and-run and is investigating to identify the vehicle and driver involved. No arrests have been made yet.
Family and Community in Mourning
Family spokesperson Finn Greve-Isdahl said: "The extended family is in a profound and all-encompassing situation of sorrow. They are struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a beloved family member." He also expressed gratitude to the Arendal community for their support.
Nikoline's stepmother told local media: "She was looking forward to coming home. It is so unfair... This is a nightmare."
Official Response
Arendal's acting mayor, Inger Brokka de Ruiter, called the incident "deeply tragic" and confirmed that the local crisis team is supporting relatives and young people affected. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry has been informed, and the embassy is ready to assist.
Nikoline had been holidaying on the Costa del Sol since June 19 and was due to fly back to Norway on the same day she died.
