A woman subjected to sustained domestic abuse has said she "just wanted a normal loving relationship" after her ex-partner was jailed. Ryan Cleverly, 27, of Woodhorn Villas, Ashington, was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison on Thursday, August 6, after admitting two counts of battery, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and criminal damage.
Abuse began early in relationship
The abuse began at the start of the six-month relationship with jealousy, manipulation, and love-bombing, which soon escalated into physical violence. Cleverly became extremely aggressive, calling his victim derogatory names and assaulting her. He headbutted, punched, strangled, dragged, kicked, and pushed her, often apologising and promising it wouldn't happen again. He also repeatedly accused her of cheating, took or demanded money from her, and did not allow her to shower alone.
In the days before his arrest, Cleverly damaged two games consoles by pouring liquids over them to exert further control. The abuse was reported to Northumbria Police after a family member intervened during the last assault, and photographs and footage were provided to investigating officers.
Court proceedings and sentence
Cleverly was charged in February and pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court in July. In addition to the prison sentence, he was handed a lifelong restraining order to protect his victim upon release.
Detective Constable Adam Goodwin said: "This is a truly shocking case of consistent abuse which started not long into the relationship. The increasing levels of violence over such a short time are extremely worrying, and I am very glad the victim-survivor made a report when she did. She should be extremely proud of herself, and I hope that she's now able to look to the future and move on in whatever way she may be able. It's clear that Ryan Cleverly is an extremely violent man and I am glad he's now beginning a lengthy stint behind bars for what he's done. As a Force, we'll do everything we can to hold abusers to account and it's important to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to that."
