Jimmy Reid and Aaron Fordy, crew members of Serenity Farne Islands Tours, have been honoured by PETA with a 'Hero for Animals' award for rescuing an Alsatian dog named Bruce off the coast of Bamburgh in June. The worldwide animal welfare group recognised their bravery and quick actions that saved the dog's life.
Rescue at Sea
The duo were out at sea taking visitors to Inner Farne when they heard a Coastguard broadcast requesting assistance. A sudden gust of wind had blown Bruce, who was on an inflatable kayak, away from his owner off Bamburgh Beach. The owner called the Coastguard, prompting RNLI volunteers and the Seahouses Coastguard Team to be dispatched, while local tour operators and fishing boats joined the search.
Aaron spotted Bruce from the upper deck of their vessel, Serenity 4. As the boat got closer, the crew grew concerned that the dog had vanished. Aaron grabbed the dog by its harness, but the dog escaped and fell back into the sea. Mr Fordy reached over the side to grab Bruce and prevent him from falling further into the water.
Team Effort
Mr Reid secured the dog so both could work together to bring Bruce safely aboard. Skipper Jimmy Reid said, "If Aaron hadn't managed to grab the dog when it slipped back into the water, the outcome could have been very different. His quick reactions and determination were crucial in bringing the dog safely aboard."
Bruce was reunited with his owner, named Arron, who thanked the Serenity crew and RNLI staff. He said: "I don't know what I would have done if he wasn't found. I couldn't bring myself to leave him, but there's nothing I could do when he got so far out. Bruce is okay home safe and sound, thanks to the Serenity Crew and everyone involved."
PETA Award
As a result, PETA awarded the pair a Hero to Animals award. The duo confirmed that the heart-warming rescue was a team effort and that the award was gratefully received. “Thanks to these rescuers’ heroic actions, what could have been a tragedy for Bruce had a happy ending,” says Vice President of Programmes Elisa Allen. “We hope their compassionate deed will inspire others to help animals in need.”
The pair have been given the framed award to remember their actions and the impact it has had on Bruce and his owner.
