Northumbria Police has issued a statement on a crash in North Shields, after a van hit a bicycle, causing "serious injuries" to the bike rider. The collision took place on Tanners Bank at 12pm on Tuesday, September 22, and the force has now shared further details of the incident.
Cyclist taken to hospital
The crash, at the junction with Tynemouth Road, saw the cyclist get taken by ambulance to Cramlington Hospital for treatment of the injuries that they suffered, which thankfully police do not believe to be life-threatening.
The person who was driving the van remained at the scene in order to assist the officers as they investigated the circumstances around the collision. The North East Ambulance Service dispatched a double crewed ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.
Police statement
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At noon on Tuesday 22 September, we received a report of a two-vehicle collision at the top of Tanners Bank, at the junction with Tynemouth Road, in North Shields. It was reported that a bike and a van had collided."
"Emergency services attended and the rider of the bike was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the van remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries."
Ambulance service response
Yesterday, an NEAS spokesperson added the following: "We were called to a road traffic incident at the junction of the A193 and Tanners Bank, North Shields, shortly before 12pm on 22 September."
"We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team. One patient was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital."
