The incident occurred on a street in North Belfast, where hero bystanders intervened to wrestle the suspected attacker to the ground.

Political Reactions

Mr Farage said: "What happened in Belfast last night is horrific. The authorities must reveal the identity and status of the attacker immediately. The public are entitled to the truth." Reform's economic spokesman Robert Jenrick added: "We've woken up to truly barbaric footage on a street in Belfast. Of a kind you'd think you'd never see in this country."

Conservative Alex Burghart, Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, said: "Last night there was an appalling and brutal attack in North Belfast – which was met by extraordinary bravery by some local people. The police have made an arrest and it is vital that they are able to do their job. Residents should be told the facts of the case as soon as possible."

Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Gavin Robinson, said anyone who has seen the video "will be unable to unsee it" and described the attack as "barbaric". He added: "This issue has a different sense to it and there are concerns about the consequences of this incident. It is essential police speak clearly on the incident."

Police have arrested a man believed to be Somalian in connection with the attack. The investigation is ongoing.
