Manchester United are facing further frustration in the transfer market after two former players were sold for combined fees of nearly £100m. The Red Devils are attempting to overhaul their squad following a difficult 2024/25 campaign, but their efforts have been hampered by the departure of ex-stars for significant sums.
Anthony Elanga, who left United for Nottingham Forest for £15m two years ago, has joined Newcastle United in a £55m deal. United, who included a sell-on clause in the original transfer, are reported to receive £6m from the move. The Swedish winger made 55 appearances for United before being deemed surplus to requirements under Erik ten Hag.
Meanwhile, Alvaro Carreras has moved from Benfica to Real Madrid for £43m. The left-back, who previously spent time in Real's youth system before joining United in 2020, was allowed to leave for Benfica initially on loan and then permanently for just £5m. United retained a buy-back option but opted not to trigger it, instead receiving around £7.6m as part of the Real Madrid deal.
In terms of incomings, Bryan Mbeumo remains a Brentford player despite two rejected bids from United. The club have offered in excess of £60m, including £55m plus £7.5m in add-ons, but Brentford are demanding a fixed fee surpassing the £62.5m United paid for Matheus Cunha. The impasse adds to the frustration of manager Ruben Amorim, who is eager to integrate new players before the Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17.
