A homeowner has raised concerns about a neighbour she believes has “lost the plot” following the hosepipe ban. UK authorities have introduced a hosepipe ban across the Central region, covering Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Surrey, and parts of London and Essex. This means hosepipes should not be used for watering gardens, cleaning cars, filling paddling pools or swimming pools, or cleaning windows.
Thames Water said its region had seen 40% of the usual average rainfall at this time of year, and most days at or above 34C since records began. However, the bans can cause serious issues between neighbours, as people see others supposedly thwarting the rules.
Neighbour's Threat Sparks Debate
One person asked on Reddit: “My neighbour says she'll call the police if she sees anyone using a hosepipe. Has she lost the plot?” They continued: “I had a slightly bizarre conversation with my neighbour this morning while we were both out the front of our houses. The hosepipe ban came up, and she said that if she saw anyone on the street using a hosepipe, she'd call the police. I genuinely thought she was joking, but she was completely serious and said people need to be held accountable. It got me thinking less about the ban itself and more about the etiquette of it all.”
They asked readers: “If you saw a neighbour using a hosepipe during a ban, would you actually confront them or report them? Or would you just assume they might have an exemption, be using a different water source, or simply mind your own business?” Concluding that it seemed like a step too far to get police involved, they said: “It feels like there's a line between wanting people to follow the rules and actively policing your neighbours. I'm curious where most people think that line is.”
Mixed Reactions Online
One person said they didn’t care at all if people were ignoring the ban. Another said: “Whilst the point you make is true, this mindset can easily backfire when you end up with the actual water shortage the hosepipe ban is trying to prevent.” Another pointed out that some people are exempt from the ban, and there is no way of knowing who these people are, so it is best to hold off on any reporting. They said: “I wouldn’t report because I don’t know their individual circumstances. Blue badge holders for example are automatically exempt from any hosepipe ban, and there could be many other reasons I’m unaware of why someone might need to use a hosepipe.”
