A Marks & Spencer customer has sustained a brain bleed following a road-rage incident over a disabled parking bay, say police.
Officers said the pensioner was trying to climb into the passenger seat of her vehicle when the confrontation erupted at Grand Junction Retail Park in Crewe. An impatient motorist repeatedly honked their horn at the woman to hurry up, as she was blocking their access to a vacant disabled space nearby.
The frightened shopper reportedly tumbled and struck her head during the ordeal, with the aggressive driver fleeing the scene immediately afterwards. The incident occurred at 3pm on Friday, September 11. The injured shopper remained hospitalised last night.
Police appeal for witnesses
Police are now appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information that could help their investigation.
A Cheshire Constabulary spokesperson explained: "An elderly couple were approaching their car which was parked in a disabled space outside M&S at Grand Junction Retail Park.
"The man was opening the passenger door for his disabled wife when another car approached and began beeping its horn. The driver was signalling towards the couple, urging them to get out of the way so that they could park in an empty space next to the couple."
Woman remains in hospital
The spokesperson continued: "The couple were startled by the behaviour and as a result the woman fell over and banged her head. The driver of the car subsequently sped off from the scene."
The woman was assisted at the scene by a number of off-duty nurses before being taken to hospital where it was found that she had suffered a bleed on the brain. The woman remains in hospital at this time.
Officers are appealing for witnesses and continue their efforts to trace the driver. Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting incident number 2418994.
