An aggressive thug who used a can of Monster energy drink as a weapon has walked free from court.
Manchester Crown Court heard how William Fogg, 34, of Epsom Mews, launched an assault on Hunjo Olowaseun while the victim was standing at a shop counter.
Attack captured on CCTV
Prosecuting, Ewan Cooper told the court how Mr Fogg attempted to prise a mobile phone from Mr Olowaseun's hand on July 4, 2026.
In CCTV footage shown to the court Mr Fogg was seen attempting to swipe a mobile phone from Mr Olowaseun's hand as the pair waited at the shop counter. The defendant was then seen to grab Mr Olowaseun from behind, causing him to fall to the ground.
Footage showed the defendant grabbing a can of Monster energy drink, before using it to hit Mr Olowaseun in the face.
Permanent scarring
Mr Cooper told the court that Mr Fogg had inflicted an injury to the victim's nose, and that Mr Olowaseun had attended hospital for the injury.
Addressing Mr Fogg, who appeared in court via video link, Recorder K.C Hayton described the assault as a "really unpleasant incident", which had left Mr Olowaseun with "permanent and irreversible" scarring. Recorder Hayton added that the victim would bare the scarring "for the rest of his life".
Suspended sentence
Acknowledging that the defendant had entered an early guilty plea for wounding without intent, Recorder Hayton told Mr Fogg: "I am not going to send you back to prison."
Recorder Hayton handed the defendant a custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months, ordering him to also complete 20 days of rehabilitation.
