The first victim of a mass shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan has been identified as John Bond, a 76-year-old Navy veteran and grandfather, his family confirmed.
Bond, a software salesman, was a father to six children and grandfather to ten. His wife recounted their final moments together before he left for church, saying: 'I love you'.
A GoFundMe page set up by his family will help cover memorial costs and support his wife, Joanne Bond. Loved ones remembered him as 'a lover of golf and trains' who cherished time with family.
Sunday's service ended in horror when gunman Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, rammed his truck into the church, set it on fire, and opened fire. Bond was one of four killed; seven others aged 6 to 78 were injured.
Eight victims were taken to Henry Ford Genesys Hospital, where one died during surgery. Medical chief Dr Michael Danic praised staff and first responders who 'went in and out of the fire to drag people out'.
The FBI is investigating the attack as 'targeted violence', and examining reports that Sanford 'hated people of Mormon faith'. Sanford, a Marine and Iraq War veteran, was killed in a shootout with police.
