Michael Keaton paid tribute to the late Charlie Kirk at the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ 50th anniversary gala on Monday, while also addressing the gun violence that claimed his life. Acknowledging their political disagreements, Keaton stated, 'Regardless of how I probably — not probably — have disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife. You gotta remember that.'
Keaton continued, 'Because in the end, shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable.' The actor’s remarks highlighted the contradiction between Kirk’s death and his advocacy for gun rights.
Scott Pelley, the event’s host and a '60 Minutes' journalist, also addressed Kirk’s murder. 'Charlie Kirk was murdered to silence his speech,' Pelley said, linking it to the killing of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband. He added, 'Whether you agreed with Kirk’s ideas or Hortman’s, their murders, their silencing is blood on the First Amendment.'
Kirk, a conservative activist known for his slogan 'Prove me wrong', died on 10 September after being shot at a college campus in Utah. He was 31. Donald Trump mourned him on Truth Social, calling Kirk 'legendary' and offering condolences to his family.
