Martinez Right to Criticise Man Utd, Shouldn't Be Punished

Lisandro Martinez faces potential punishment from Manchester United for criticising the club's hierarchy following Tuesday night's defeat to Atletico Madrid. The defender launched a verbal tirade against the INEOS regime after the match, accusing them of failing to invest in the playing squad.

Defeat and Criticism

United fell behind within a minute of the match and were reduced to 10 men when Leny Yoro was sent off in the second half. Five minutes later, Ademola Lookman doubled Atletico's lead to secure all three points.

Martinez was furious after the final whistle and directed his anger at United's hierarchy. He also pointed the finger at sporting director Jason Wilcox, suggesting he should face the same level of scrutiny as players and the manager.

Wilcox's Record

Wilcox joined the club in 2024 during Erik ten Hag's tenure and has overseen a continuing decline. Ten Hag was sacked and replaced by Ruben Amorim, who lasted 13 months before being succeeded by Carrick. Three managers have come and gone, but Wilcox has stayed on, largely escaping criticism.

Earlier this month, it emerged that United staff had internally acknowledged failures to sign players like Mateus Fernandes, Elliot Anderson, Aurelien Tchouameni and Ederson, as well as their inability to land a new left-sided defender.

Potential Consequences

There have been suggestions that Martinez could be suspended by the Red Devils as a result of his fiery interview. Punishing him would achieve little and could sow further discontent behind the scenes, at a time when everybody needs to be pulling in the same direction.

Instead of being angry with Martinez, United chiefs should take his advice on board and look at themselves in the mirror.
