Andrew Haire, 35, whose body was discovered at a recycling facility in Dublin on Friday evening, may have died in Cork and been transported to the plant in a bin lorry, Gardaí believe.
Workers at the Greyhound waste plant in Clondalkin found Mr Haire in the sorting area shortly after 9pm. He was originally from Co Meath and had recently been availing of welfare and homeless services in both Dublin and Cork city centres.
Investigation into foul play
Gardaí are investigating whether foul play occurred, noting that Mr Haire had not collected his social welfare in recent days. A post-mortem examination was conducted on Saturday, July 25, 2026, but results have not been released for operational reasons.
Officers are reviewing CCTV footage of his last known movements in Co Cork and speaking to associates. They believe he was in Dublin, Kilkenny and Cork city centres between July 17 and July 24.
Relationship with Donal Scanlon
Mr Haire was in a close relationship with Donal Scanlon, a homeless man who died in a drowning incident in Dublin in 2024. Mr Scanlon, 49, from Ballybunion, Co Kerry, was found floating in a canal near the Charlemont Luas stop on July 6, 2024, alongside American Alex Warnick, 42.
At Mr Scanlon’s inquest last February, Mr Haire testified that there had been "a lot of drink and drugs involved" the day before the tragedy. He expressed concern about the quantity of tablets Mr Scanlon had taken due to his heart condition.
Friend's tribute
A friend, speaking anonymously, described Mr Haire as a "bubbly" and "nice" person. He said: "Him and Donal would always go all over the country. They would just get on a train and go off for a few weeks and come back."
The friend added that after Mr Scanlon's death, Mr Haire was "heartbroken" and "a shell of a man". He had known Mr Haire since 2019 and believed he had been homeless since around 2017.
Appeal for information
Gardaí in Ronanstown have established an incident room at Lucan Garda Station and appointed a Family Liaison Officer. A Garda spokesperson said: "The Office of the Chief State Pathologist and the Garda National Technical Bureau were notified and the body of Mr. Haire was removed from the scene. A post-mortem examination has since been conducted on Saturday 25th July 2026. The results of which will not be released for operational reasons."
