A gunman killed four people at a Manhattan skyscraper housing the NFL headquarters and several major financial firms before turning the gun on himself, New York officials have said. The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident with a history of mental illness, drove cross-country to New York in recent days, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Among the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh and father of two whose wife is pregnant. He was working off-hours as a security guard at the time. Mayor Eric Adams described him as a 'true blue hero'. The other three victims were two men and a woman; a third male was gravely wounded and 'fighting for his life' in hospital.
The shooting spree began in the lobby of the Park Avenue tower in Midtown Manhattan during the evening rush hour. Surveillance footage showed Tamura exiting a double-parked black BMW and opening fire immediately upon entering the lobby. He then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, the offices of Rudin Management Company, where he killed one person before shooting himself in the stairwell with an assault rifle.
Police found weapons in the parked BMW, along with a prescription in Tamura's name. Tisch confirmed the shooter acted alone and was dead. The NYPD believes the incident was isolated. A large police presence converged on the area, and photographs showed people exiting the building with hands raised.
US House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed concern over the 'horrific shooting', saying he was 'praying hard' for the officer. The shooting is the 254th mass shooting in the US this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
