Man Severely Injured Opening Beer with Knife on Beach

A man suffered a "potentially life-threatening" injury while trying to open a beer bottle with a knife on a beach during the heatwave in North Wales.

Incident on Aberdyfi Beach

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 28, at around 2pm on Aberdyfi beach in Gwynedd. According to emergency responders, the man's knife slipped during the attempt, causing a deep arterial cut to his arm.

Bystanders on the beach immediately rushed to the man's aid, applying pressure to the severe wound to stem the bleeding before professional help arrived. Officials noted that these swift actions by members of the public played a critical role in saving the man's life.

Multi-Agency Rescue Response

The HM Coastguard quickly alerted local emergency services, prompting a coordinated response from multiple rescue agencies. RNLI Aberdyfi launched their lifeboat, Hugh Miles, within minutes. Two casualty-care-trained crew members went ashore to administer advanced first aid. Local Community First Responders and the Welsh Ambulance Service arrived shortly after to stabilise the patient.

Due to the severity of the arterial bleed, the casualty was airlifted via helicopter to a regional hospital for emergency treatment.

Statements from Responders

"This was a fantastic multi-agency response, with everyone working together to ensure the casualty received the best possible care," an Aberdyfi RNLI spokesperson said in a statement. "We'd also like to thank the members of the public whose swift actions before our arrival helped make a real difference."

Oli Simmons, a volunteer crew member who attended the scene, described the call-out as "uncommon" for the lifeboat crew. "The gentleman had slipped when opening a beer with a knife and given himself a deep wound," Simmons said. "Members of the public had done a great job in stemming the bleeding until we arrived. With support from our colleagues in Community First Responders, the Welsh Ambulance Paramedic and the Air Ambulance crew, we got the gentleman patched up and taken onwards to receive further treatment. A great outcome and a reminder to use the right tool for the job."
