Dean Campbell, 38, was sentenced to 15 months in prison at Hamilton Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to assaulting a man, causing severe injury. The attack occurred near Hamilton West Station on February 24, leaving the victim with a fractured eye socket.
Details of the Assault
Prosecutor Kevin Morrow told the court that the victim and another person were walking along a narrow alley near the station around 2pm. They encountered Campbell walking towards them. The victim said 'Just go' to allow Campbell to pass, but Campbell punched him on the left eye, causing him to fall to the ground. The victim immediately got up and fled with the other person.
Police officers at the train station saw the victim in distress with obvious facial bruising. He was taken to Wishaw General Hospital, where doctors confirmed a fractured eye socket. Campbell was later found at an address in Cambuslang.
Defence and Sentencing
Defence solicitor Gregor Jarrott said Campbell and the victim knew each other. Campbell claimed he misheard 'Just go' as 'Let's go' and reacted emotionally. Jarrott added that Campbell had been remanded in custody and intended to become a better person upon release.
Sheriff Liam Murphy described the assault as unprovoked, noting Campbell's significant criminal record, including prior convictions for violence. He stated there was no alternative to custody, backdating the 15-month sentence to February 26, when Campbell was arrested.
