Terence Welsh, 42, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 19 years for the murder of Stuart Kennedy, 59, in Ardrossan. The sentence was handed down at the High Court in Edinburgh after Welsh was found guilty last month.
Welsh had denied the murder during his trial at the High Court in Glasgow. The attack took place at a block of flats on Montgomerie Street in the North Ayrshire town on the evening of September 10, 2024.
Details of the attack
Emergency services were called to reports of a disturbance at the flats. Stuart was found fatally wounded within one of the flats and was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman was also found injured outside the building and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Detectives described the stabbing as a "brutal" attack.
Police response
Detective Inspector Jamie Carruth said: "My thoughts remain with Stuart's family and friends at this difficult time. Nothing can make up for their loss, but I hope this outcome will bring them some form of comfort.
"This was a brutal attack and Welsh now faces the consequences of his despicable actions.
