A man has been taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle collision on the A40 west of Carmarthen caused traffic chaos, forcing drivers to park in a field.
Emergency Response and Injuries
A large emergency services response, including police, fire crews, paramedics and a Wales Air Ambulance crew, was sent to the A40 between Carmarthen and St Clears late on Thursday afternoon. Firefighters from Carmarthen arrived at around 4.10pm and freed one person who was medically trapped in a vehicle. The Wales Air Ambulance helicopter landed shortly after 4.30pm.
Police confirmed a man was taken to hospital, but no further information on the severity of his injuries has been released.
Traffic Disruption
Both lanes of the dual carriageway were closed in both directions between Bancyfelin and Llanllwch. One lane on each side reopened on Thursday evening. The crash caused long tailbacks on the A40 and on nearby country lanes used as diversions, which also became gridlocked. Many motorists turned into a field north of the A40 to clear congestion on a narrow diversion road towards Carmarthen.
A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: "We received a report of a five-vehicle collision on the A40 between Carmarthen and St Clears at around 4:10pm on Thursday, July 24. The incident caused traffic delays until the cars were recovered, debris was cleared, and emergency services completed their medical checks at the scene. One person was taken to hospital. The road reopened at around 6:15pm."
History of Crashes
The A40 between Carmarthen and St Clears has a history of crashes, including several fatal incidents in recent years. Just hours after Thursday's crash, a section of the dual carriageway was again closed due to a collision on Friday morning, reopening shortly before 11am.
